Frequently asked questions

Can I use Recall without an API key?

Yes. Recall works in local mode without any AI provider. You can save photos, descriptions, locations, notes, and search your saved memories locally. In local mode, Recall does not send your photos or memory content to third-party AI providers.

Does Recall store my data on a server?

No. Recall is local-first and does not operate a backend that stores your memories.

What data is shared with AI providers?

Only if you enable AI and use an AI feature, Recall sends the specific content needed for that request directly to your selected provider. Depending on the task, this may include a photo, your search text, speech-to-text results, item descriptions, locations, notes, tags, and related memory details needed to answer that request.

How do I stop AI data sharing?

You can use Recall in local-only mode. Removing your API key or withdrawing AI permission in the app stops future requests to third-party AI providers.

What happens if AI image analysis fails?

You can still save the item with a manual description. The capture flow is designed not to block your memory just because a model route is unavailable.

Which AI providers are supported?

Recall supports user-owned keys for OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, Qwen, Kimi, MiniMax, GLM, and DeepSeek text routes. Model availability depends on your provider account.

Can I move my memories to another device?

Yes. Recall can export a portable backup file that includes your memory metadata and photos.
